Bunge Loders Croklaan is part of a Rehabilitation and Conservation Program in Pahang, Malaysia which runs from September 2018 until August 2020. The goal of the program is to implement peatland rehabilitation and fire control activities with the indigenous community and to empower the community through education and awareness.

Objectives

• To enhance the rehabilitation effort by improving the hydrological system of the effected peatland area
• To implement enrichment planting activities at the degraded peatland area
• To implement peatland fire prevention measures through establishment of a community-led patrol team

This project has expanded peatland protection and conservation activities in Bukit Leelau. Key achievements include:

• Site assessment using satellite images, drone and ground surveys has indicatedapproximately380ha area have been rewetted consequence from canal block construction and monsoon;
• Establishment of the community-based fire patrolling team. The patrolling team will monitor the area for fire risk, alerting authorities and providing input to peat hydrology management;
• Solar power system installation has been completed. The system includes lighting and water powered pump system;
• Community generated income by selling surplus from mushroom farming;
• Community benefited from agriculture activities by selling kelulut honey
