Phosphatidylserine is a high-quality ingredient that contributes to mental and physical well-being. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is one of a group of phospholipids that are the building blocks of brain
cell membranes. Lipids are found in large quantities in the human brain. They make up 60% of the brain’s dry weight and 40% of them are phospholipids including PS. As an essential building block of neuronal membranes, PS contributes to the brain’s structure and its signaling systems. Consistently with its structural importance, scientific evidence suggests that PS mightsupport cognitive function and brain activity in people of all ages, from children to elderly.(1 2 3 4 5)
PS is found in several food sources including fish, milk, rice and beans. But modern diets have reduced our daily intake of PS. What’s more, PS declines in the brain after 35 years of age(6 7)
That’s why it’s an ingredient increasingly added to a wide variety of products, ranging from dietary supplements and functional foods to toddler and children formula, sports nutrition and yogurts or snacks.
In US, FDA concludes that structure and function claims are allowed: “Consumption of phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of dementia or cognitive dysfunction in the elderly”.
In Europe, EFSA concludes that the current evidence is still preliminary and does not support a health claim at this time. This material is provided for information only.
